The Diwali lights have finally been switched on in Leicester, and there's an excitement in the air above Belgrave Road as the big day approaches.

Diwali Day falls on Thursday 19 October this year, and will culminate with more celebrations along the Golden Mile, including a dazzling firework display.

So how is the event celebrated?

Before Diwali night, people clean their homes and offices and, on the night itself, they dress in their best clothes.

Lamps and candles are lit, fireworks are set off and there are prayers, a family feast and exchange of gifts.

People also wish each other a Happy Diwali as part of this annual occasion.
